Tips on Building Basements

1. Make it a cast-in-place concrete wall basement.
2. Use a minimum of 8" of washed gravel under the slab.
3. Use both exterior and interior drain tile and cover with a minimum of 20" of washed stone or gravel.
4. Waterproof with TUFF-N-DRI guaranteed dry basement waterproofing. Accept no substitutes.
5. Make a full basement if possible. You will need the room.
6. Always use a high volume, high quality dehumidifier. All basements are cool and the temperature variation on very hot days could cause dampness problems.
7. If a sump pump is needed, provide a back up in case there is a power outage during a storm. Provide a water pressure or a battery-powered pump just in case.
8. Make sure the grade slopes away and is not too high on the basement wall.
